Step 1 – Prepare your transition plan
The transition can sometimes be a long process and you need to be well prepared to wait for the ‘right’ career move. First, you need a good plan. Start with identifying your strengths and interests. After that, you will have to find out the best jobs for which you are a well suited match, and how well your temperament and work style behaviors fit with the ideal career path you are pursuing. Does all this appear to be too daunting a task? Fear not. Simple, scientific and cost effective tools like employee assessments will make this process much easier. Once you have answered these important questions, you can move ahead and plan the basics of the transition. You’ll face a series of financial and mental challenges along the way, so take all these into account before you begin the process.
Step 2 – Define your goals
You need a set of specific, tangible and measurable goals that can be achieved within a pre-defined time period. Set realistic goals and break down your bigger goals into a series of smaller steps. Taking action without a goal is flying blind; when you have a goal you pilot your actions to an important and desirable destination. Personal career goals allow you to feel more in control and to link your work style behavior with a specific outcome which is important to you.
Step 3 – Protect yourself
The transition can be a very stressful time. Take care of yourself, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. Also, remember to eat right and try to relax. This trip can be an immensely powerful journey that allows you to discover what you really want in life and fulfill your sense of purpose. You need to learn to take care of yourself. Direct your energy to take positive action. Make allowances for a trying financial period before you start executing your transition plan. Be sure you have some savings that can pull you through difficult times if the going gets tough. Also, be prepared to deal with possible career change situations. For example, don’t just pick up and leave your old job when you’re looking for new career avenues. Make the jump only when you’re sure you can cross the chasm.
Step 4 – Focus on the Positive when Actively Managing Your Career Transitions
Transitions, whether planned or unexpected, can knock you out of your comfort zone. They bring a variety of emotional reactions and can cause a fair amount of stress for people. Rather than look upon these transitions as negative situations, try to view them as opportunities and a ‘call to action’. Career changes can be wake-up calls to help us focus our energy and to bring about a positive change in our lives.. The road may be a little longer than you want it to be, but it can be a very worthwhile journey. When implemented constructively, the search process can lead you to a job choice that is a better fit with your natural work style tendencies and a more fulfilling career.
Step 5 – Dream BIG
Unless you dream big, you cannot achieve BIG. Let loose your imagination and think of all that you can do and achieve. Visualize your dreams. Believe in yourself and share your dreams with your near and dear ones. This will help you focus and very soon you’ll reach what you are aiming for. Whether you are choosing a new career or re-evaluating a current one, transitioning to a new job situation can offer you an opportunity to enhance your career path. A career assessment can give you added focus by helping you better understand…
Your natural work style strengths
Tasks which are a ‘good fit’, as well as a ‘poor fit’ for you
The type of work environment you are most likely to enjoy
Which rewards motivate you the most
This additional insight can motivate and energize you and make you feel more confident about the career choice you eventually make. The idea here is to not make a career transition to just another job, but to move to a job that is the right fit for you and will bring you a great deal of job satisfaction as well as feelings of self worth.
