Airport jobs have a lot of responsibility attached to them, and baggage handlers are no exception to this rule. There are some requirements that you will need to meet to be considered for the job.
You need to be eligible to work in the country, whether you are a citizen or have a valid work permit. A valid driving licence is usually required. You do a lot of lifting in this job, so it is vital that you have good strength. Communication skills are very important, and it helps if you are fluent in English. Working in a stressful environment requires a cool head and a good attitude. You need to be self motivated and work well in a team. The nature of the work means you will have to work some shifts on bank holidays, weekends and even at night. A criminal record will usually mean that you cannot do this job.
The safe loading and unloading of luggage and cargo is your responsibility. Ramp service agents also service the planes’ toilets, water store and other tasks as delegated by the company.
Responsibilities of the role:
- Make sure the ramp is safe and secure
- Giving assistance when passengers are either boarding or disembarking from the aeroplane
- Direct, assist and park towed aircraft
- Luggage transferring
- Stay in close communication with the flight crew

Although the role of the baggage handle generally goes unnoticed by passengers, it is an essential part of the airport operation. Silly mistakes can cause hold ups and delayed flights, which is never good.
