The world functions the way it does because each and every one of us play our roles to the best of the capacity. The most fundamental fact of the society is that each and everyone of is required; be it a doctor, an engineer, a plumber or a carpenter. We all have to work day in and day out to ensure that other parts of the ecosystem work smooth.
Every element of the society is as important as the other one. If they don’t function smoothly, there is a risk that the whole system will come down. Thus, everyone – even those with the most tedious, the most boring and the most dangerous jobs – have to be on their toes all the time. Other professionals such as firefighters are no exception.
Firefighter have probably the toughest job of them all. Tough perhaps isn’t the right word; they have a dangerous job. They continually play with fire just to make sure that others are saved.
If they are not competent, a good part of the world would always be on fire due to a whole host of reasons.
Firefighting is a difficult job, something that asks for a lot. For one, you have to be extremely fit, both mentally and physically. Depending on your country, there is a training period that equips you to handle any kind of situation. No matter how much you try to replicate it, real situation – one where you have to work with real fire – can’t be replicated.
The salary of a firefighter varies a lot, depending on the country and the rank. In the United States, the salary of a firefighter is about forty thousand dollars. After a few years of experience, he can earn above $75,000. If you’re ranked higher, such as a captain, or a battalion chief, your salary will reflect that. Battalion chiefs earn in the six figures.
As you can see, a firefighter salary isn’t fixed. Developed economies pay a lot more. In third world countries, the salaries of a typical firefighter would be much lower than what it would be in developed economies.
It’s not all about the salary though; being a firefighter carries other benefits too. Keeping aside the salaries, there are other important aspects of being a firefighter. As I pointed out above, being a firefighter requires a lot of compassion and you have to be very strong mentally. Make sure that you are ready for such a job before you take up firefighting as a career.
