This job is not for everybody. You must be able to endure hours of work at the computer screen to do this job effectively. You need to be quick and accurate at typing. Your job is to transfer data, by looking at it and retyping it into a computer program. You need to have a high tolerance to boredom and be able to focus on the tasks you are given. If you get frustrated by having your creativity squashed, then this is not the job for you.

If you are not suited to the job it would be a mistake to take it up. It will be hard for you to hold onto the job is you are not the right kind of person for this role.

Data entry job hazards

RSI, or Repetitive Strain Injuries are a big problem in this job. Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause problems in your hands. Your eyes may suffer from spending too much time looking at a computer screen. Poor posture whilst sitting at the desk can also lead to back problems and stiff shoulders.

Reduce risks by taking safety precautions.

  • You should take a break from the screen for five minutes every hour
  • The right set-up of your chair and computer screen will help save you
  • Use a wrist support at your keyboard and mouse
  • In your extra time, make sure you are exercising
