Career Search Networking Part 2
Career Search Networking Part 2
Keys to Networking
If you are looking for work or thinking of a career change, networking is an important part of your approach. Your contatcts could provide a career link to your next move.
Obviously the way you approach contacts depends on how well you know them. However, in general it is important to:
Not start by asking for a job, as most people you speak to will not have a job available to offer you. Instead emphasise that you are seeking advice, guidance and information from them.
Ask your contacts opinion on which organisations or companies you should consider approaching.
For some people the first few phone calls to set up meetings with your network contact may seem awkward or embarrassing. The best way to overcome this feeling is to prepare yourself
Make some notes about the key things you want to say.
Practise your opening lines.
Get to the key points – your situation and your needs – quickly and directly.
Follow up. Once you have established a useful contact, keep in touch with them every two to three weeks.
Keep an accurate record of all your contacts with notes about any follow-ups.
Preferably meet contacts face to face. This will strengthen your ties with them.
Always request names of one or two other people who, in your contacts opinion, will be able to assist you further.
Be sure to drop a personal note of thanks to those who go out of their way to help you. And when you get a new position let them know of your success.
Be patient.
