There are several common mistakes that are made by those looking for a new job. The majority of recruitment people and HR staff always see the same silly mistakes that are so easy to avoid. Before you apply for your next job make sure you’re not about to make one of these obvious mistakes.
Make sure you meet the requirements of the position. If the job calls for a minimum of two years experience and you only have one years experience you’re just wasting the recruiters time. You also need to make sure you have the right experience. If you’re applying for a marketing recruitment job and it asks to at least three years marketing experience you need to make sure you have that three years marketing experience.
Make it obvious you’ve put the effort into the job search. If your cover letter and CV is too generic it will look too generic. You need to customise each cover letter and prove you’re perfectly suited for this role. If you’ve used an online recruitment agency there’s no excuse for not using the internet to do a bit more research. Read up on the company you’re applying to work for and point out where you could fit into their business.
Presentation is very important. No one should feel it’s acceptable to turn up for an interview in jeans and a t shirt. The clothes you’re wearing is not the only presentation you need to think about. The presentation of your CV can be enough to get to excluded from the interview state. If you don’t feel your CV is up to scratch get some CV advice. Check for things like having a sensible email address rather than the one you had in high school.
These are just a couple of the mistakes recruiters see over and over again from people applying for jobs. It doesn’t take much to ensure you don’t make any of these mistakes and by doing so you’ve already put yourself ahead of all the people who have made these mistakes.
