Education requirements

To meet the minimum requirements you will at least have to finish high school. Gaining qualifications in college or university will make you a lot more attractive to employers. Further, flight attendant courses will give you the edge. Whatever your previous experience, it is typical of newly hired attendants to have to undergo training with the airline that hires them.

Other requirements

• Flight attendants need to be over 18, or in some cases over 21, so get employment.
• Airlines often try to choose flight attendants with experience of working with customers.
• To work for an international airline you will probably have to learn a foreign language.
• Because flight attendants need to be able to reach overhead storage compartments, there are usually height requirements.
• The eye sight requirements are at leas 20/30 with correction.
• New recruits are subject to a thorough background check.

Advancing your career

For a year or more, depending on the airline, you will be on reserve status after you have completed your initial training. This means that you will fill in when the regular flight attendants are off duty or if there is insufficient staff.

Regular assignments can be applied for when you have finished your time under reserve status. More experienced staff have first choice on assignments.
