Make a point of finding ways to improve your CV and then tailor this CV every time you are going for a different role. Giving a general account of your skills and experience will not be appreciated half as much as if you tailor your CV to the role you are applying for; remember how busy the person reading through these applications is.

Also never underestimate the value of a cover letter to go with your CV. The cover letter is your chance to impress the reader and to make sure they know why you are the perfect person for the job; sell yourself at every opportunity and make sure the reader wants to meet you in person.
