Visioning and Choosing A Career

Choosing careers can be difficult, do you just aim for the hottest careers or should you focus more on your existing skills?

Decision-making starts with vision. In order to set career and personal goals, take some time now and incorporate the knowledge you have of yourself and visualize what you want your life to look like. This is a foundation of career planning and will make sure you career build in the right direction.

In the best of all worlds, where would you be living?

Who would you be living with?

What would your relationships be?

What would you be doing in work and in leisure?

What kind of lifestyle would you want?

Getting clear on your vision gives you a useful criteria with which to assess career options and specific roles

The process of answering these questions can help you to develop your own personal vision. Once you have that vision, you have the raw materials that can be turned into long-term and short-term goals. Your vision may be lofty or practical.

Consider these examples:

•    Raising a happy family in a wholesome environment
•    Improving personal health for you and your family
•    Having a career that makes other people happier
•    Achieving recognition through creative efforts
•    Preparing for a carefree retirement
•    Creating an estate

Knowing what you want from your life will help you to set:
•    Career objectives
•    Personal objectives
•    Community objectives
•    Lifelong learning objectives
•    Goals

Start with the "big picture" and then consider how your objectives will help you reach your vision. You can then plan short-term goals and action steps.
