What is a CAPM Certification

The certification for Certified Associate in Project Management, or CAPM abbreviated, is largely obtained by individuals wishing to help out as project team members in their area of expertise or by individuals wishing to advance their career as a project management professional. The CAPM certification is the entry level of PMI family of certifications that project manager hopefuls should start at.

This credential is proof to your employer and interviewers that you acquired the experience or education to execute your tasks proficiently. It also says that you are serious and committed about your job because getting a credential requires dedication and discipline.

When applying for work, many employers will give preference to candidates with PMI certifications over one without. Employers have an idea of what they can get from a certified employee as opposed to others with the same amount of experience with no credential. A credential will provide your resume with an edge and allow more opportunities to sharpen your skills and develop enough experience to one day become a PMP.

To be eligible for the CAPM, you must satisfy certain requirements. You must have at least a high school diploma or global equivalent and have 1,500 documented hours of work on a project team, or take 23 hours of project management courses. These requirements have to be completed at the time of application. You must then pass the three hours, 150 questions exam that’s based on the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) guide.

It is highly encouraged that you take a training course to help prepare you for the exam. If available, you can opt for courses that count towards college credits or PDUs (These are Professional Development Units that are mandatory to maintain a PMP credential). Courses are generally intensive and lasts anywhere from 16 to 40 hours. For best results, the exam should be taken right after the course so that information is still fresh in the memory.

One should not underestimate the importance of a CAPM credential. The benefits of education, experience, and opportunity it provides to an individual serious about career advancement, commands respect and can not be overlooked. Aspiring PMs are encouraged to acquire this entry level certification to launch their journey of becoming a project management professional.
